About

Öveçler Dürümcüsü specialises in the dürüm — the rolled Turkish wrap filled with charcoal-grilled meats, fresh greens, sharp onions, and tomato — which has become over the past decades one of the most beloved forms of quick Anatolian street food. Located in central Ankara, the shop is compact and purposeful, with a long grill visible through the front counter, a stack of thin lavaş breads ready to be warmed, and a lineup of fillings including tender lamb şiş, spiced minced kebab adana-style, and chicken marinated in tomato and yoghurt. Every sandwich is made to order: the bread is passed briefly over the grill to soften, the filling of meat and grilled vegetables is laid along the centre, a shower of finely chopped parsley, onion tossed with sumac, and sliced tomato is added, the whole is rolled tightly and cut in half before being wrapped in a paper jacket for eating at the counter or taking away. All meat is halal and sourced from Ankara butchers who supply the shop daily, and no alcohol is served; the usual drinks are ayran, şalgam, and cold spring water. The staff are quick and good-humoured, handling the lunchtime rush with the practised efficiency of a kitchen that has been perfecting the same few dishes for years. The small plastic stools set along the wall outside the counter fill up at lunchtime with students, apprentice mechanics from nearby workshops, and clerks on their lunch break, all eating their dürüm with the focused concentration that a well-made sandwich deserves, exchanging the odd nod of recognition with the counter staff who have been feeding them every working day for years. Prices are well within the reach of students and working people, and it is not unusual to see a queue spilling onto the pavement between noon and two. Öveçler Dürümcüsü is a perfect stop for Muslim visitors who want a fast, authentic Turkish lunch without any of the complications of larger restaurant menus, and the pickles that come as a side, if one asks, are made in-house and worth the detour on their own.
