کے بارے میں

Wema Madrasat is one of the many small neighbourhood Qur'an schools that thread through Magomeni, the historic inner suburb of Dar es Salaam whose name itself carries echoes of older Swahili settlements. 'Wema' in Kiswahili means goodness or kindness, and the school lives up to that name by welcoming children from every economic background, asking only that families contribute what they can toward the modest running costs. The teaching day usually begins in the late afternoon once government schools have released the pupils, with youngsters gathering in simple classrooms furnished with low benches, wooden reciting boards, and well-thumbed copies of the juz 'amma. The core curriculum centres on Qur'an memorisation and tajweed, supported by lessons in Islamic belief, the fiqh of prayer and purification, and the seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Older students are sometimes introduced to basic Arabic grammar so that they can read the sacred text with understanding rather than sound alone. The teachers — many of them graduates of larger madrasas in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar — place a strong emphasis on adab, reminding the children that good character is the first fruit of knowledge. Families in the surrounding streets rely on Wema to keep their children away from the temptations of idle afternoons and to plant the roots of lifelong practice. The madrasa also hosts occasional public lectures for parents, often focused on raising children in the faith, handling household finances in a halal way, and navigating modern Tanzanian society without losing one's religious identity. Visitors to Magomeni who are interested in local Islamic education will find Wema Madrasat unassuming in its premises but rich in sincerity, a working example of how grassroots institutions continue to sustain the Muslim community of Dar es Salaam from one generation to the next. Older students at Wema, particularly those who show a gift for memorisation, are sometimes encouraged to aim at completing the entire Qur'an before leaving the school, with occasional modest celebrations held by the teachers and parents when a pupil reaches a new milestone in their hifz journey.
