About
Al-Jabbar Mosque, located in the Abu Ghurayb area on the western edge of Baghdad, takes its name from Al-Jabbar, "the Compeller" or "the Omnipotent", one of the Beautiful Names of God frequently invoked in the Qur'an. This Name emphasises the power of God to set matters right, to restore what is broken and to execute His will with irresistible authority, while also, in some scholarly interpretations, signalling His ability to mend and to heal. Naming a mosque after such a Name of God invites worshippers to reflect on divine strength, justice and the consolation that comes from trusting in a Creator who can remedy every situation. The mosque serves as a local gathering place, offering the five daily prayers, Friday congregations, Eid gatherings and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged with carpets oriented carefully towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for the weekly sermon. A minaret marks its architectural presence on the neighbourhood streetscape. The imam leads prayers in the refined Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often explore the meanings of the Divine Names, including Al-Jabbar, and their implications for the believer's daily life. Ramadan is a particularly rich season, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study, especially verses speaking of God's Names and Attributes. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies, while adult study circles engage tafsir, seerah, fiqh and works on the Divine Names. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in hardship. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals are coordinated through the mosque. For its congregants, Al-Jabbar Mosque stands as a daily reminder that the One who is supreme in power is also merciful enough to listen when His servants turn to Him. An often-remarked detail about Al-Jabbar Mosque is the particularly beautiful calligraphic inscription of Ayat al-Kursi above its main entrance, a verse whose themes of divine sovereignty align closely with the meaning of the mosque's name and serve as a quiet greeting to every worshipper.
