About

Grand Mosque Alsamrayy, located in the Abu Ghurayb area on the western edge of Baghdad, bears a name connected to the city of Samarra, which lies roughly 125 kilometres north of Baghdad and served as an Abbasid capital in the ninth century. Samarra is famous for its spiral Malwiya minaret and the historic Great Mosque, and it holds a special place in the religious imagination of Iraqi Muslims across communities. Naming a mosque "Alsamrayy" ties it implicitly to this deep architectural and spiritual heritage, perhaps honouring a family that migrated from Samarra or simply evoking the resonance of that famed city. As a "Grand Mosque", the building is large enough to serve as a significant local institution, hosting the five daily prayers, Friday congregations, Eid gatherings and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged carefully with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for the weekly sermon. A minaret marks its presence against the surrounding landscape. The imam leads prayers in the classical Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often draw on Iraq's rich history of scholars and sacred cities, including Samarra. Ramadan is a particularly rich season, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and Prophetic biography. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah and fiqh, and sometimes engage Iraqi history and the heritage of Abbasid Samarra. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in hardship. Weddings, aqiqahs and funerals are coordinated through the mosque's administrative support. For its worshippers, Grand Mosque Alsamrayy serves as a reminder that their daily prayers stand in a long tradition stretching from the great mosques of Abbasid Samarra through every modest prayer hall built since. An often-mentioned detail at Grand Mosque Alsamrayy is the modest library room, open throughout the week, which preserves a small but well-chosen collection of books on the scholars of Samarra, Baghdad and Najaf and the long intellectual heritage of Iraqi Islam.
