About

Imam Jafar Al-Tayar Mosque, located in the Abu Ghurayb area on the western edge of Baghdad, carries a name honouring Ja'far al-Tayyar, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, the older brother of Ali ibn Abi Talib and cousin of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace). Ja'far earned the title "al-Tayyar", "the one who flies", through a hadith in which the Prophet consoled his family after his death in the Battle of Mu'tah by saying that God had replaced his severed arms with wings, allowing him to fly in Paradise. Ja'far is remembered for his eloquence, his courage, and particularly for his leadership of the Muslim emigration to Abyssinia, where he famously recited the Qur'an and explained Islam before the Christian King. Naming a mosque after such a beloved companion ties its spiritual atmosphere to themes of bravery, articulate faith and sincere service. As a mosque, it offers the five daily prayers, Friday congregations and the full calendar of Islamic observances. The prayer hall is arranged carefully with carpets oriented towards the qibla, a mihrab marking the direction of Mecca and a minbar used for the weekly sermon. A minaret marks its presence on the surrounding street. The imam leads prayers in the classical Iraqi style of Qur'anic recitation, and khutbahs delivered in Arabic often draw on Ja'far's life and the early history of Muslim migration to illustrate themes of courage, eloquence and patient faith. Ramadan fills the mosque with particular activity, with long taraweeh prayers, shared iftars and programmes dedicated to Qur'anic study and early Islamic history. Qur'anic education for children is a central feature, with classes teaching tajwid, memorisation and basic Islamic studies. Adult study circles explore tafsir, seerah and fiqh. Charitable work includes zakat collection, support for widows and orphans, and aid for families in hardship. For its congregants, this mosque is a daily reminder that a companion whose arms were cut in battle flies still in the gardens of Paradise. Over time, Imam Jafar Al-Tayar Mosque has quietly become a recognisable thread in the daily fabric of Abu Ghurayb, Iraq, valued by its regular visitors as a dependable and unpretentious presence in the neighbourhood.
