About
Blauwe Moskee, the Blue Mosque of Amstelveen, is a purpose built mosque in the southern Amsterdam suburb whose distinctive architecture makes it one of the most visually striking Islamic buildings in the Netherlands. Completed in recent years as a project of the local Moroccan and broader Muslim community of Amstelveen, the mosque takes its informal name from the deep blue exterior cladding that sets it apart from the typical red brick of Dutch residential architecture. The design references classical Islamic mosque elements including a dome and minaret adapted to the constraints and sensibilities of a Dutch suburban setting. Amstelveen, a prosperous municipality immediately south of Amsterdam home to many Dutch and international residents, hosts a diverse Muslim community including longstanding Moroccan and Turkish families as well as newer arrivals from Syria, Somalia, and elsewhere, and the Blauwe Moskee serves as their principal place of worship. The interior prayer hall is generous and light filled, carpeted in warm tones, oriented toward the qibla, and decorated with Islamic calligraphy drawn from the Qur'an and the beautiful names of Allah. A dignified mihrab and a finely crafted mimbar anchor the front of the hall, while a women's section with its own entrance ensures that sisters may attend with full ease. Ablution facilities are modern and well appointed. The mosque offers the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Arabic and Dutch, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Arabic and Dutch language education for children, welfare services, marriage and funeral rites, and community outreach to wider Amstelveen society. Ramadan brings nightly tarawih prayers attended by hundreds, communal iftars in the spacious community hall, Qur'an khatm by the blessed final nights, and itikaf in the last ten. Eid celebrations fill the mosque with families in festive attire exchanging warm greetings and making the blue exterior glow against the Dutch sky. Guided tours of Blauwe Moskee welcome Dutch visitors from schools, churches, and civic organisations throughout the year, offering them an introduction to Muslim worship, Islamic architectural elements, and the life of the local community, and the mosque has become something of a landmark in Amstelveen both as a place of worship and as a point of encounter between the Muslim community and its Dutch neighbours in the spirit of mutual curiosity and respect.
