Endowed by the pious Yemeni scholar Sheikh Abdullah Mansir Hazam, this mosque waqf in the town of An Nasirah, in the Omran Governorate of Yemen, stands within a land famed throughout Islamic history for its scholarship, poetry, and ancient civilisation. Yemen carries the title of al Yaman al Sa'id, the Fortunate, a name recorded in classical Arabic geography, and its mountainous interior gave rise to some of the earliest Arab kingdoms, among them Saba and Himyar, mentioned in the Qur'an and in inscriptions many centuries before the rise of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, praised the people of Yemen for their tenderness of heart and depth of faith.

An Nasirah sits among the rugged highlands of Omran, a province of stone villages, terraced fields, and narrow valleys where coffee, qat, and grain have long been cultivated. The waqf system, by which a donor permanently dedicates property for the benefit of a mosque, a school, or a charitable cause, has sustained religious life in Yemen for more than a thousand years. Through turbulent times and seasons of famine, the revenues of agricultural lands, shops, and water sources set aside in perpetuity have allowed masjids to remain standing and imams to continue their teaching.

The generous benefactor whose name this endowment carries followed in the footsteps of countless earlier donors, including the great Queen Arwa bint Ahmad al Sulayhi, may God have mercy on her, whose twelfth century foundations still mark the Yemeni landscape. The building combines the characteristic features of highland Yemeni masjids: massive stone walls, small windows deep set in thick masonry, whitewashed interiors, and a flat roof supported by wooden beams cut from the junipers of the mountains. Worshippers sit on woven palm mats during the five daily prayers.
