Mehmet Zahid Kotku Camii is named after Mehmet Zahid Kotku (1897–1980), a highly influential twentieth-century Turkish Sufi master of the Naqshbandi order whose circle in Istanbul's Iskenderpaşa Camii shaped the religious formation of a generation of Turkish Muslims, including some who would later become prominent in public life. Kotku was known for his emphasis on the integration of classical Sufi discipline with practical engagement in the social and economic life of the Turkish Muslim community, and his legacy has been carried forward by his students and by institutions that continue to bear his name. The Ankara mosque that bears his name is a substantial neighbourhood structure of modern construction, with a well-proportioned central dome, a slim minaret, and a stone-paved forecourt. Inside, the prayer hall is finished with considerable care, with a carpet in warm tones, a carefully worked mihrab, calligraphic panels along the walls, and a comfortable upper gallery for women. The imam's Friday sermons often reflect the Naqshbandi emphasis on the inward life combined with outward responsibility, and the congregation includes a notable number of worshippers with ties to the broader Iskenderpaşa tradition. Qur'an and ethics classes for children run throughout the year, and weekly adult study circles tackle themes of tafsīr, fiqh, and classical Sufi literature. During Ramadan the mosque runs an extensive programme of tarawih, Qur'an khatms, and community iftars, and the last ten nights draw particularly large congregations. The imam himself is understood to have studied under one of Kotku's direct students in his own youth, and the particular cadence of his Qur'anic recitation — unhurried, reverent, marked by the careful pronunciation of every letter — preserves something of the devotional style that the Iskenderpaşa circle cultivated in their followers during the decades when the teacher was alive. For Muslim visitors to central Ankara interested in the continuing vitality of Turkish Sufi traditions, Mehmet Zahid Kotku Camii is a particularly fitting place to pray and to spend a quiet half-hour in reflection, and the careful atmosphere of its interior is itself a small lesson in the refinement that the great Naqshbandi teachers sought to cultivate in their students.
