Sokullu Fatih Camii combines two of the most evocative names in Ottoman Islamic history. Sokullu refers to Sokollu Mehmed Paşa, the sixteenth-century Grand Vizier who served Sultans Süleyman the Magnificent, Selim II, and Murad III, and who is remembered as one of the most capable statesmen of the entire Ottoman era. Fatih — 'the Conqueror' — is the title almost universally applied in Turkish Islamic tradition to Sultan Mehmed II. To combine these two names in a mosque is to invoke simultaneously the ideal of the warrior-ruler who opened the way for Ottoman civilisation and the ideal of the wise minister who sustained and extended that civilisation through decades of careful administration. The Ankara mosque bearing this name is a dignified neighbourhood structure with a single minaret, a central dome, and a forecourt paved in stone. Inside, the prayer hall is carefully finished, with a carpet in warm tones, a detailed mihrab, and calligraphic panels of high quality along the walls. The imam's Friday sermons often engage with the great themes of Ottoman Islamic history — justice, service, the integration of spiritual and worldly responsibility — and his recitation is measured and clear. Women pray in a comfortable upper gallery, and children attend Qur'an classes in the annex. Ablution facilities are clean and heated in winter. During Ramadan the mosque runs a full programme of tarawih and community iftars. The mosque's library holds a fine edition of Mimar Sinan's memoirs, recorded for him in his old age, in which the great architect describes the mosque he built for Sokollu Mehmed Paşa in Kadırga as among his own personal favourites — a detail that members of the congregation sometimes turn to when they wish to understand more deeply the legacy that their mosque's name evokes. For Muslim visitors to central Ankara with an interest in the long Ottoman Islamic legacy of which modern Turkey is the heir, Sokullu Fatih Camii is a particularly fitting place to pray, and the two names inscribed above its entrance are themselves a reminder of the weight of memory that every Turkish mosque carries into the present.
