About

Dedicated to the beloved Imam Ja'far al Sadiq (peace be upon him) in the town of Afak near as Samawah in Al Muthanna governorate of Iraq, Jami al Imam Ja'far al Sadiq Mantiqah 36 serves a devout Iraqi community in a region of marshes, date groves, and vast agricultural plains along the lower Euphrates. Imam Ja'far al Sadiq (peace be upon him) was the sixth imam of the household of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and he lived in Madinah during the eighth century, teaching thousands of students from across the Muslim world in Qur'anic exegesis, jurisprudence, theology, and the natural sciences. Among his students were the founders of the major schools of Muslim legal thought.
As Samawah itself is an ancient settlement along the Euphrates, known as a market town and a pilgrimage stop for travellers moving between the holy cities of Najaf, Karbala, Kufa, and Baghdad. The Al Muthanna governorate takes its name from the early Muslim general al Muthanna ibn Harithah, who led Arab armies against the Sasanian forces in the first generation of Islam. Beyond those layers of history, the region carries a living tradition of Qur'anic recitation, elegiac poetry, and communal remembrance that fills the nights of Muharram and Safar with the story of Karbala and the sacrifice of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), the grandfather of Imam Ja'far al Sadiq.
Architecturally the mosque follows the simple modern Iraqi style common across the southern provinces. Cream coloured walls frame arched windows, a single minaret rises above the flat roof, and a modest dome sits above the prayer hall. Inside, patterned carpets cover the floor, ceiling fans turn through the long Iraqi summer, and calligraphic panels along the upper walls carry names of the Prophet's noble household. Friday prayers gather farmers and townspeople together, and the nights of Ramadan and Muharram fill the hall with recitation and remembrance. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at this mosque in Afak are posted on this page for every resident of Al Muthanna and every visitor along the Euphrates.
