Known as Nabi al Rahma Mosque and Husayniya, dedicated to the Prophet of Mercy, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and endowed in memory of the late Hami Shamal, this institution in Ash Shatrah of the Dhi Qar governorate in southern Iraq serves a community in the marshlands and agricultural plains where the Tigris and Euphrates flow toward their confluence with the Persian Gulf. Dhi Qar takes its name from the historic battle of Dhi Qar fought shortly before the advent of Islam, a site of enduring significance in Arab memory. The marshes of southern Iraq have supported continuous human habitation for more than five thousand years, with their reed architecture, water buffalo herding, and fishing economy persisting despite the enormous disruptions of the late twentieth century. Iraqi mosque and husayniya architecture blends ancient Mesopotamian foundations with Abbasid brickwork, Safavid and Qajar influences from Iran, and modern concrete construction. This Nabi al Rahma compound combines the Jami function of congregational prayer with the Husayniya function of memorial and educational gatherings, particularly those commemorating Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, and the events of Karbala. Inside, the carpeted prayer and gathering hall accommodates worshippers and community members, with a mihrab, a minbar, and perhaps calligraphic panels displaying the names of the Prophet and his family, peace be upon them. Daily prayers gather worshippers from the surrounding streets and farms, and Jumu'ah fills the hall. Sermons in Iraqi Arabic with classical Qur'anic passages address religious themes, ethical responsibilities, and reflections on the noble lives and sufferings of the Prophet's family, peace be upon them. Ramadan transforms the community rhythm with communal iftar gatherings featuring Iraqi specialities including kubba, masgouf grilled fish, tashreeb, stuffed vegetables, and sweet pastries. The Husayniya function becomes especially active during Muharram and Safar with majlis gatherings, marsiya recitations, and processions. Women participate in dedicated worship and memorial spaces and lead their own study circles. Nearby attractions include the ancient Sumerian city of Ur with its great ziggurat, the marsh landscapes and reed architecture, and the historic shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala further north.
