Bearing the name of Imam Nugman ibn Sabit, this central masjid of Asykata in the South Kazakhstan region honours a figure of extraordinary significance in the history of Islamic jurisprudence, namely Abu Hanifah al Numan ibn Thabit, may God have mercy on him, whose foundational legal methodology shaped the religious practice of vast populations across Central Asia, the subcontinent, Turkey, and beyond. Kazakhstan's Islamic heritage is ancient and distinctive, the Turkic peoples of the steppe having embraced Islam gradually over several centuries through the efforts of traders, missionaries, and scholarly networks linking the cities of the Silk Road to the nomadic pastoralists of the grasslands. The South Kazakhstan region, known today as Ongtustik Qazaqstan, encompasses some of the most significant Islamic sites of the Turkic world, including the great shrine of Khoja Ahmad Yasawi, may God sanctify his secret, in Turkestan, whose magnificent Timurid era mausoleum commissioned by Amir Timur remains among the masterpieces of medieval Central Asian architecture. Asykata itself is a smaller settlement in this region, and its central masjid named for Imam Abu Hanifah anchors the devotional life of the local community. Architecturally the building reflects contemporary Central Asian Islamic design, a broad domed prayer hall faced with pale blue tilework reminiscent of the great Timurid monuments, a tall minaret visible across the surrounding steppe, carpeted interiors figured with intricate floral medallions, and a carved wooden mimbar bearing geometric patterns drawn from Kazakh nomadic felt traditions. Daily prayers follow the programme of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan, Jumu'ah khutbahs are delivered in Kazakh with Arabic Qur'anic recitation, and the fasting month brings the community to fasts with beshbarmak, kazy sausage, kumis fermented mare's milk, baursak fried dough balls, and the sweet breads baked in tandir ovens. Tarawih prayers extend through the cool steppe nights. Eid prayers bring families in colourful traditional dress to the courtyard. Visitors travelling through the South Kazakhstan region toward Turkestan's great shrine will find Asykata a worthy stop for prayer. The masjid endures as a meaningful node in the revival of Kazakhstan's Islamic heritage after the long Soviet era, its activities sustaining the unbroken transmission of faith to new generations whose engagement with both the classical jurisprudential heritage and the wider Turkic Muslim tradition will carry these precious inheritances into the future.
