Cumhuriyet Mahallesi Merkez Camii in the Bahçelievler district of Istanbul, Turkey, serves as the central mosque of Cumhuriyet Mahallesi, a neighbourhood whose name Cumhuriyet, meaning Republic, reflects the many Turkish neighbourhoods founded or renamed in the aftermath of the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The merkez designation identifies this mosque as the primary focal gathering place of the neighbourhood, hosting the Friday midday prayer, Eid celebrations, funeral congregations, and larger community occasions in addition to the five daily obligatory prayers. Bahçelievler, the Houses of Gardens, is a large residential district on the European side of Istanbul, developed extensively in the second half of the twentieth century and today home to hundreds of thousands of residents.
