Serving as the headquarters mosque of the Haut Conseil Islamique du Mali, the national body that coordinates Islamic affairs across the Sahelian republic, this grand place of worship stands in the Malian capital of Bamako on the banks of the Niger River. Mali's Islamic heritage stretches back over a millennium to the empires of Ghana and Mali, when emperors such as Mansa Musa led his famed pilgrimage to Mecca in thirteen twenty four, distributing so much gold along the way that the Cairo market remained destabilised for a generation. The great mud brick mosques of Djenne and Timbuktu, the libraries that produced the Sankore manuscripts and the scholarly lineages of the Kunta and Fulani reformers all contribute to the rich intellectual tradition that the Haut Conseil guards today. The headquarters mosque in Bamako reflects a balance between modernity and Malian tradition, rising several storeys in white rendered concrete with gilded accents, a broad central dome tiled in turquoise and twin slender minarets bearing calligraphic bands in the classical maghribi hand. The entrance is framed by a monumental horseshoe arch inscribed with verses of Surah al Noor, and a spacious courtyard paved in cool travertine welcomes worshippers. Inside, the main prayer hall spans a wide rectangle supported by slim marble pillars with gilded capitals, the floor covered in carpets imported from Rabat and Fez patterned in deep green and cream. The mihrab is clad in pale marble and flanked by carved wooden panels of tropical hardwood from southern Mali, and the minbar is of ornately worked ebony with brass inlays. The women's section occupies an elevated gallery accessible by its own entrance. Friday prayers draw civil servants, merchants, students and diplomats, and sermons are delivered in Arabic with translations into Bambara, Fulani and French for the multilingual congregation. During Ramadan the Haut Conseil hosts large public iftars featuring tigadegena, jollof rice and thieboudienne.
