About

Gracing the village of Chondipur in the Belonia subdivision of the Indian state of Tripura, Jame Masjid Chondipur serves the Bengali speaking Muslim community that has long farmed the fertile plains near the Bangladesh border. Tripura, a small hilly state in India's northeast, neighbours Bangladesh on three sides and shares a cultural and linguistic heritage of Bengali poetry, music, rice cultivation, and gentle village Islam with its eastern neighbour. The Muslim community of Tripura traces its roots partly to the medieval Mughal administration and partly to waves of settlement across the centuries by farmers, weavers, traders, and teachers moving along the riverine pathways of Bengal.

Islam arrived in Bengal during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries through the conquests of Bakhtiyar Khalji and the subsequent arrival of travelling saints, darweshes, and Sufi orders who preached through song, parable, and compassionate example rather than forced conversion. Saints such as Shah Jalal of Sylhet, Khan Jahan Ali of Bagerhat, and countless lesser known village pirs gathered the Bengali countryside into the fold of the faith, and the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, came to be loved in every Bengali home through poetry recited at weddings, naming ceremonies, and funerals.

Belonia, the subdivision in which Chondipur sits, lies along the Muhuri river where rice paddies, pineapple groves, and bamboo thickets shape the rural landscape. Village jame masjids like the one in Chondipur serve as centres for the five daily prayers, the Jumu'ah sermon that draws farmers from distant paddies, the long tarawih nights of Ramadan, and the two joyful Eid gatherings that remind the community of its unity with believers across the wider Bengali world.

Architecturally the building reflects the characteristic rural Bengali style. Whitewashed walls, three or five arched openings in the façade, a central dome flanked by smaller domes, slender minarets with tapered tops, and a forecourt with a tube well ablution area welcome worshippers. Inside, patterned jamdani woven mats and carpets cover the floor, a simple wooden minbar rises beside a calligraphic mihrab, and high windows admit the monsoon breeze during humid summer nights.

Current prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the jame masjid are published on this page alongside the Chondipur address, a clear map pin, and considerate notes for visitors approaching from Belonia town, Sabroom, or the road from Agartala the Tripura capital. Ramadan evenings bring iftar tables of muri, chana, pakora, piyaju, jilapi, and sweet firni shared generously with every neighbour. Travellers exploring northeastern India are welcomed with the gentle courtesy of the Bengali village, invited to pray within the cool whitewashed interior, and kindly encouraged to whisper a sincere du'a for the steadfast Muslims of Tripura whose faith has flourished in a quiet corner of the subcontinent for many centuries.
