About

Moskee el Fath in Berkel en Rodenrijs, a small residential town just north of Rotterdam in the rural Lansingerland municipality, takes its name from al Fath, the Victory, a title that recalls surah al Fath of the noble Qur'an which was revealed in celebration of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the peaceful settlement between the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam and the Quraysh of Makkah that opened the way for the bloodless conquest of the holy city two years later. The concept of fath in Islamic vocabulary encompasses both military victory and the spiritual opening of hearts to divine guidance, and naming a mosque Al Fath reflects the aspiration of its congregation to know both kinds of victory in their own lives. The mosque serves the Muslim community of Berkel en Rodenrijs and surrounding rural localities, drawing worshippers who might otherwise travel into Rotterdam for a place of prayer. Housed in an adapted building, the mosque features a modest prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, a mihrab, a mimbar, and a women's section. Ablution facilities serve the daily needs of worshippers. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an recitation and tajwid classes for children and adults, Islamic education for young people, Dutch language support for newer immigrants, marriage and funeral services, and welfare distribution. Ramadan brings the mosque into particular activity with nightly tarawih prayers, community iftars where families gather to share meals, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights as worshippers seek Laylatul Qadr. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha celebrations unite the community in joyful prayer and festive gatherings, reflecting the victory and opening that the mosque's name invokes as gifts from Allah to His faithful servants. The rural setting of Berkel en Rodenrijs provides Moskee el Fath with a unique quiet character different from the bustling urban mosques of central Rotterdam, with worshippers often gathering outside after prayers to enjoy fresh air and the gentle sounds of the countryside, a setting that the imam sometimes uses to illustrate Qur'anic descriptions of gardens, fields, and the bounty of creation when drawing lessons for the congregation's reflection.
