About
The East London Mosque is arguably the most historically important Muslim institution in the United Kingdom, and walking through its doors you can feel the weight of that history without anyone having to tell you. Founded in the early twentieth century and expanded several times since, the mosque now sits at the heart of a wider complex that includes the London Muslim Centre and the Maryam Centre — together forming one of the largest Muslim campuses in Europe. Its position in Whitechapel, a neighborhood shaped by successive waves of migration over the past century and a half, is deeply symbolic: where Huguenots, Jews and Bengalis once rebuilt their lives, Islam has become part of the settled texture of the place. The main prayer hall is vast, capable of holding thousands, and on Fridays and during Ramadan it fills to capacity and then spills into the overflow halls and the street. The community is overwhelmingly of Bangladeshi heritage, but on any given day you will hear Arabic, Urdu, Somali, English, Turkish and more mingling in the foyer. Ramadan here is unforgettable: nightly iftars for hundreds of worshippers, long Taraweeh prayers led by visiting huffaz, queues that stretch out onto Whitechapel Road as people wait to enter for Laylat al-Qadr. The centre runs a huge range of programs — Quran memorization, Islamic studies for adults, youth work, counselling, funeral services, bereavement support and a thriving women's wing in the Maryam Centre. It has also been a pioneer in engaging with wider society, hosting countless interfaith events, civic visits and open days. For Muslims visiting London for the first time, East London Mosque often feels like a reassuring first stop — a place where the din and the diversity of the ummah are visibly alive. For non-Muslims, it remains one of the most welcoming introductions to British Muslim life. Visitors are asked to dress modestly, follow the prayer schedule and enter with the respect the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught his companions to carry into every masjid.
