About
Surrounded by the gentle farmland and vineyards of the Rhineland, the Islamisches Gemeindezentrum Bruhl, known affectionately as the Bruhler Moschee, provides a welcoming home for Muslims in the small city of Bruhl between Cologne and Bonn in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia. Bruhl itself is famous for the UNESCO listed Augustusburg Palace, built in the eighteenth century for the Elector of Cologne, and for its long tradition of pilgrimage traffic along the Rhine. The Muslim community here has grown steadily since the 1960s, drawing first labourers and later families from Turkey, Morocco, the Balkans, and many other countries who settled in the wider Cologne Bonn region.
The centre functions as both a congregational mosque and a cultural meeting place, hosting adult German language classes, children's weekend Qur'an and Arabic schools, youth activities, and community iftars during Ramadan. The building occupies a converted civic hall carefully refurbished to accommodate Muslim worship, with a modest prayer hall on the ground floor, a women's gallery, a wudu area for ablution, teaching rooms, and a kitchen used frequently during community gatherings.
The prayer hall is plainly finished, with green carpet marked by geometric prayer line medallions, a mihrab framed by simple calligraphy, and bookshelves holding German translations of the Qur'an, biographies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and short books of hadith and stories of his companions, may God be pleased with them. Friday khutbahs are generally delivered in Turkish and summarised in German, or delivered entirely in German when a guest imam visits, reflecting the multilingual character of the congregation.
Worshippers include workers from nearby companies, students commuting from the universities of Cologne and Bonn, families from the surrounding residential streets, and elderly members who have attended the centre for many decades. Visitors exploring Augustusburg Palace, the Phantasialand amusement park, or the Rhineland towns of Bonn and Cologne will find here a calm space for prayer, precise daily timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha listed on this page, and the open neighbourly welcome that has made the Bruhler Moschee a quietly important institution in the region.
