Butterworth Floating Mosque is one of the more visually distinctive mosques in mainland Penang, built on a platform extending over the water to create the illusion — from the right angle — that the building is floating on the sea. The mosque sits in the Bagan Ajam area of Butterworth, facing across the Penang Strait toward George Town and the distant profile of the island's heritage buildings. Opened after a period of community fundraising and municipal support, the floating mosque has become a minor tourist destination alongside its primary role as a functioning place of worship. The architecture is contemporary Malaysian: a broad central dome, slim minarets, and an exterior that uses reflective surfaces and clean lines rather than traditional Moghul or Ottoman ornament. The prayer hall inside is substantial and airy, with generous windows that open toward the water and fill the space with natural light during daytime prayers. The congregation is a mix of Butterworth residents, families from the broader Seberang Perai district, and the daily trickle of visitors — Malaysian tourists stopping for a photograph and a prayer, Muslim travellers passing through the mainland on their way to or from the island, non-Muslim visitors who appreciate the unusual architecture. Jumu'ah fills the hall, with the khutbah delivered in Malay. During Ramadan the mosque runs nightly Taraweeh, hosts community iftars with a particularly scenic setting as the sun sets over the water, and coordinates with state authorities on public Islamic events. Eid prayers see the mosque draw one of the largest gatherings in the Butterworth area. The mosque is easily reached from the main ferry terminal and the railway station; non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times, with the usual modest dress expected and robes available at the entrance.
