کے بارے میں

Humbly set among the busy streets of Chittagong, the bustling port city on the southeastern coast of Bangladesh, the Markazul Ulum al Islamiyyah Jame Masjid combines a neighbourhood prayer hall with a modest centre of Islamic learning, its name rendered in both Arabic and Bengali scripts. Chittagong has been a significant Muslim settlement for more than seven centuries, having entered the Muslim world through the Delhi Sultanate's eastern campaigns and flourishing as a maritime trading post under Mughal patronage, when Arab, Persian, and Turkish merchants traded with the ports of Southeast Asia. The city's older quarters preserve dense neighbourhoods of brick and concrete buildings, small mosques on nearly every lane, and the memory of scholars, merchants, and saints who shaped the Bengali Muslim tradition.

The name Markazul Ulum al Islamiyyah, the Centre of Islamic Sciences, reflects the classical Bengali madrasa pattern in which a neighbourhood mosque is joined with a madrasa offering instruction in the Qur'an, the noble hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, classical Arabic grammar, and the principles of fiqh. Across Bangladesh many thousands of such combined mosque madrasa centres form the spiritual and educational backbone of Muslim community life, connecting every neighbourhood to a chain of learning stretching back to the earliest companions, may God be pleased with them.

The prayer hall itself is a simple concrete structure with pale plastered walls, a tiled roof, and a modest minaret. Inside, green carpeting covers tiled floors, the mihrab is framed by calligraphic panels drawn from the Qur'an, and a wooden minbar stands beside it. The adjoining madrasa occupies classrooms on an upper floor where children sit cross legged reciting the Qur'an in patient rhythms from dawn until Dhuhr, and older students work through classical textbooks.

Daily prayers gather workers from the port, traders from the nearby markets, teachers from local schools, and students of the madrasa. Friday khutbahs are delivered in Bengali with Qur'anic verses quoted in Arabic, often dwelling on themes of patience, honesty, and the noble character of the Prophet and his companions. Visitors to Chittagong exploring the Shrine of Bayezid Bastami, the old Portuguese port, or the beaches of Patenga will find precise daily prayer times at this masjid listed on this page, alongside address and notes helpful to every traveller.
