Serving the town of Gagarin in the Jizzax Region of Uzbekistan, the mosque named after Imanqul Qalpe offers the local Uzbek and Kazakh community a house of prayer rooted in the Central Asian tradition of honouring pious ancestors. The Jizzax Region lies at the eastern edge of the Kyzylkum Desert, a historic crossroads where the agricultural lands of the Zarafshan Valley meet the open steppe. This countryside was crossed for centuries by Silk Road caravans carrying silk, porcelain, paper, and above all the teachings of Islam, which reached Transoxiana in the eighth century during the campaigns of the Muslim armies into the region that the Arabs called Ma wara al nahr, the land beyond the river.

The name Imanqul Qalpe honours a respected local scholar and teacher. Qalpe, a variant of the Turkic halfa or khalifa, is the title given to a senior teacher of the Qur'an and Islamic sciences who has taken on the task of passing knowledge to a new generation. During the long decades of Soviet rule, when religious education was severely restricted, figures such as Imanqul Qalpe preserved the recitation of the Qur'an, the lives of the Companions, and the love of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, often teaching quietly in private homes and passing on both the science and the spirit of faith at great personal risk.

The town of Gagarin, named after the famous Soviet cosmonaut, grew during the industrial development of the Jizzax steppe and includes a mix of Uzbek, Kazakh, Tajik, and Russian residents. The mosque itself is built in the modest Central Asian village style, with a plastered prayer hall, a flat roof supported by wooden pillars, a small courtyard shaded by fruit trees, and a slender minaret added more recently. On Fridays the jumuah khutbah is given in Uzbek, with passages of the sermon quoted in Arabic.
