Across the sprawling northern peninsula of Sulawesi, in the coastal plains of Gorontalo province, the regional leadership hall of the LDII Islamic association, known formally as Dewan Pimpinan Wilayah Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia Provinsi Gorontalo, functions both as administrative office and as a daily prayer space for members of the organisation and for neighbours of the surrounding quarters. The upper floor holds meeting rooms where elders plan charity distribution during Ramadan and coordinate travel for young preachers visiting rural villages in the interior of Gorontalo, while the ground floor serves as the main prayer hall, fitted with pale green carpets and simple wooden lecterns.

Gorontalo city sits beside the warm waters of the Gulf of Tomini, framed by low hills and a sheltered harbour once used by pearl traders. The local language, a Malayo Polynesian tongue spoken by roughly a million people, carries many loanwords from classical Arabic, and Friday sermons here are regularly delivered in a gentle mixture of Bahasa Indonesia, Gorontalo, and the quoted Arabic of the Qur'an. Members greet one another with the traditional salam followed by the warm local phrase tabe, a courteous gesture of respect that elders especially appreciate.
