کے بارے میں

Hidden within the tight kampung lanes of Gubeng Airlangga in Surabaya, this modest prayer house known as Musholla Al Muttaqin welcomes residents from the narrow alleys of Simo Gunung Kramat Timur and serves as a quiet anchor of devotion in Indonesia's second largest city. The name Al Muttaqin, drawn from Quranic language, denotes those who fear God and guard their souls with awareness, a fitting aspiration for the families who gather within its walls. Surabaya carries a proud Islamic heritage, having hosted the nine Wali Songo era pilgrimage route and later earning the nickname Kota Pahlawan, the city of heroes, for its role in the Indonesian struggle of 1945. The neighbourhood of Gubeng developed around the main railway station built during the Dutch colonial period and today bustles with university students attending nearby Airlangga, small traders, and young families in simple terraced houses. Architecturally the musholla is modest, a ground floor hall with white tiled walls, tall louvred windows, ceiling fans that circulate the humid coastal air, and a small mihrab decorated with calligraphy on painted ceramic. A short green dome crowns the roof, and loudspeakers carry the adhan along the lane five times each day. Worshippers include becak drivers, neighbourhood guards, housewives, and children attending TPA Quranic lessons held after the asar prayer. The Friday congregation spills onto mats laid in the alley, with the khateeb preaching on the virtues of honest work and kindness to parents. Ramadan evenings are luminous with lanterns, shared bowls of bubur ayam or es buah, and extended taraweeh led by young hafiz from the surrounding pondok network. On the two Eids neighbours exchange halal bihalal greetings, forgiving slights and renewing bonds. Travellers exploring Surabaya can reach the musholla by ojek from Gubeng station, and nearby sights include the Heroes Monument, the Al Akbar regional mosque, and the historic Arab quarter of Ampel steeped in Javanese Islamic tradition. Weekly women's study circles meet in a side room, where local ustadhahs teach tafsir, fiqh of purification, and domestic duties in the light of prophetic guidance. Children gather after maghrib for recitation contests with modest prizes of sajadah mats and small mushafs. The committee organises clean water distribution during the East Java dry season and supports local widows with monthly rice provisions financed from weekly sadaqah boxes placed discreetly at the entrance. Such small acts knit the kampung together with bonds that persist across the generations along this cherished old alley of historic Surabaya.
