Ibi Ose Iba Oluyole Mosque in Ibadan takes its name from a locality honouring Iba Oluyole, one of the legendary nineteenth century war chiefs of Ibadan whose leadership shaped the city's rise as a major Yoruba power during the chaotic era of the Yoruba civil wars. Ibadan emerged in the early nineteenth century as a refuge and military base following the collapse of the old Oyo empire, and figures like Iba Oluyole played foundational roles in establishing Ibadan's institutions, military organisation, and territorial expansion. Streets, quarters, and institutions across the city bear his name and those of other founding figures, and mosques located in such areas carry the broader connection to Ibadan's historical identity. The mosque serves the Muslim community of the Ibi Ose area of Iba Oluyole district with the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an and tajwid classes, Islamic studies in the Maliki tradition that predominates across Yoruba Muslim communities, Arabic language instruction, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, zakat distribution, and welfare services for those in need. The prayer hall is carpeted and oriented toward the qibla with a mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, and ablution facilities. The adhan called by the muadhin five times daily carries through the surrounding streets, calling the faithful to pause from their daily activities and turn to Allah in remembrance. Ramadan at the mosque brings nightly tarawih prayers drawing the community together, communal iftars featuring Nigerian Muslim specialties like jollof rice, moi moi, akara, iru, and suya alongside dates and kunun drinks, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights as worshippers seek Laylatul Qadr. Eid prayers gather the entire neighbourhood in festive celebration of Allah's favours. The mosque committee at Ibi Ose Iba Oluyole has in recent years undertaken renovations and expansions to accommodate growing attendance, with community members contributing funds, labour, and materials in the classical Yoruba Muslim tradition of collaborative ajo savings groups repurposed for religious endowments, ensuring that the mosque continues to meet the needs of its congregation as the Ibadan population steadily grows.
