Salami Agbaje Central Mosque in Ayeye, Ibadan, honours the memory of Alhaji Salami Agbaje, one of the towering figures of twentieth century Ibadan Muslim society whose business success and philanthropic contributions shaped the city's Islamic institutions across decades. Agbaje was a prominent trader and merchant in colonial era Ibadan whose wealth enabled generous endowments to mosques, schools, and community welfare projects, establishing a legacy that continued through his descendants. Mosques bearing his name across Ibadan preserve his memory as sadaqah jariyah, ongoing charity whose spiritual reward continues to flow to him long after his passing. Ayeye is one of the historic quarters of Ibadan, and its central mosque serves as the principal venue for Friday Jumuah and community gatherings in the district. The structure features characteristics of substantial Nigerian Yoruba Muslim mosques with a prominent dome, a minaret from which the muadhin calls the adhan, a generous forecourt for peak attendance, and an interior prayer hall carpeted and oriented toward the qibla with a beautifully inscribed mihrab, a finely crafted wooden mimbar, a separate women's section, and well maintained ablution facilities. Programmes include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Yoruba and Arabic, Qur'an and tajwid classes for children and adults, Islamic studies in the Maliki jurisprudential tradition, Arabic language instruction, marriage solemnisation, funeral rites, zakat collection and distribution, and welfare services. Ramadan brings the mosque into its fullest devotional expression with overflow tarawih prayers, community iftars featuring Yoruba Muslim cuisine, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha prayers draw thousands of worshippers in festive attire to the mosque and surrounding streets, a visible continuation of the community spirit that Agbaje's generosity helped to sustain across the generations. The Agbaje family maintains active involvement in the mosque's affairs generations after their patriarch's death, with descendants contributing to ongoing renovation, maintenance, and welfare projects, sustaining a tradition of Muslim philanthropic family dynasty that has been an important feature of Yoruba Muslim society and that provides stable institutional support beyond what individual imams or committees could sustain alone.
