کے بارے میں

Syrian Mosque in Ikoyi, one of the most affluent residential areas of Lagos Island, serves the Syrian and broader Lebanese and Arab Muslim community of the Nigerian commercial capital. The Syrian and Lebanese merchant communities of West Africa have a long history stretching back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when migrants from Ottoman and French mandate Syria and Lebanon, often Christian but also including Muslim families, dispersed across the region establishing businesses in trade, textiles, and manufacturing. In Nigeria they particularly concentrated in commercial hubs like Lagos, Kano, and Onitsha where their entrepreneurial networks flourished. The Muslim members of this community, predominantly Sunni though with some Shia families as well, established mosques to serve their own religious needs and to maintain connections with their Levantine Islamic heritage. The Syrian Mosque in Ikoyi is a distinguished institution of this diaspora community, offering a venue where Arabic is commonly heard alongside English, where Levantine calligraphic and architectural aesthetics might inform the decor, and where social gatherings reflect the particular cultural heritage of the Lebanese Syrian Muslim diaspora. The prayer hall is dignified, carpeted and oriented toward the qibla, with a mihrab, mimbar, separate women's section, and ablution facilities. Activities include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah with khutbah in Arabic and English, Qur'an classes, Arabic language instruction for the children of the community, marriage and funeral services, and social gatherings that maintain the Levantine heritage. Ramadan brings community iftars featuring Levantine specialties such as fattoush, kibbeh, tabbouleh, and baklava alongside dates, evening tarawih prayers, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf during the blessed final ten nights. The mosque stands as a testament to the enduring religious commitment of a diaspora community that has contributed significantly to Nigerian economic life across several generations while preserving its distinct cultural and religious identity. The Syrian Mosque maintains Arabic language classes particularly tailored for children born to Lebanese and Syrian families in Nigeria who might otherwise lose their ancestral tongue, ensuring that the second and third generations of the diaspora can still read the Qur'an in its original language, converse with relatives in the old country, and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Levant that has enriched Nigerian society for over a century.
