کے بارے میں
At number seven Shonibare Crescent in the Oko Erin quarter of Ilorin, Kwara state, stands a small Friday mosque that has served its Yoruba Muslim congregation for many years. Ilorin itself is one of the great Islamic cities of Nigeria, founded in the early nineteenth century and renowned for its ulama, its Quran scholars, and its close associations with the wider West African scholarly tradition connecting Kano, Sokoto, Timbuktu, and beyond. The Oko Erin neighbourhood sits on the western side of the city, a busy quarter of low concrete houses, narrow lanes, and open gutters where children play in the red laterite dust during the long dry season. The name Oko Erin, meaning farm of the elephant in Yoruba, recalls the ancient savannah landscape of Kwara before urban growth transformed the area. The mosque is a modest example of Ilorin neighbourhood architecture: a painted concrete box with a pitched corrugated roof, an attached minaret capped with a crescent, a shaded forecourt for shoes and ablutions, and simple ceiling fans inside the carpeted prayer hall. Arabic calligraphy painted on the qibla wall carries verses from Surah al Fatihah and the testimony of faith. The congregation is drawn almost entirely from the surrounding streets, with worshippers in agbada, kaftan, and simple trousers gathering for five daily prayers. Jumu'ah is the busiest event of the week; sermons are delivered in Yoruba with Arabic quotations, and they often touch on themes of family, honest work, and the compassion taught by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Ramadan transforms the evenings, with community iftars of moin moin, akara, and pap served before long tarawih prayers. Eid prayer spills into the adjacent street, closed to traffic for the occasion, and children receive salah gifts from the elders in crisp new naira notes. Nearby stand the Ilorin central mosque, the emir's palace with its carved wooden doors, the Esie stone carvings museum a short drive out of town, the Dada pottery at Okelele, and the quiet groves of Ilorin's old quarter where traditional weavers still work at their looms.
