کے بارے میں

Positioned at a busy junction in the Ita Alamu quarter of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state in central Nigeria, the Ita Alamu Central Mosque serves a vibrant congregation drawn from one of the most Islamic cities in southwestern Nigeria. Ilorin was founded in the late eighteenth century as a frontier settlement and rose to prominence after 1817 when the reformer Shehu Alimi established a jihadist state that linked the town to the wider Sokoto Caliphate established by Usman dan Fodio. Ilorin became the southernmost emirate of that caliphate and developed into a major centre for Islamic scholarship, Arabic learning, and Qur'an memorisation that continues to shape Yoruba Muslim identity across Nigeria today.

The name Ita Alamu, meaning roughly the Square of the Knowledgeable Ones in a blend of Yoruba and Arabic, reflects the old Ilorin custom of naming neighbourhoods after traditions of scholarship or prominent families. The central mosque of the quarter has therefore functioned for generations as both a prayer hall and an informal centre of learning, with halaqat for children after Maghrib and adult circles reading classical texts such as the Risalah of Ibn Abi Zayd al Qayrawani in the quiet hours before Isha.

The building itself is a wide concrete structure with whitewashed walls, twin minarets of modest height, a central dome finished in green and cream tile, and a broad entrance shaded by a colonnade. Inside, the prayer hall is floored with long woven prayer mats atop deep red carpet, and the mihrab is framed by calligraphic panels bearing the shahada and the opening verses of Surat al Fatiha. Ceiling fans turn constantly through the warm Nigerian afternoons, and women pray in a separate rear gallery.

Daily prayers gather traders from the markets of Ilorin, teachers from the University of Ilorin, civil servants from the state secretariat, and residents of the surrounding compounds. Friday khutbahs are delivered in Yoruba with Qur'anic verses quoted in Arabic, often drawing on the character of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and on the noble conduct of his companions, may God be pleased with them. Accurate daily prayer times listed on this page help every visitor to Kwara's capital plan a peaceful moment of devotion.
