About
Bearing the noble name of Umar bin Abd al Aziz, may God have mercy on him, this mosque in the village of Jannatah in the West Bank of Palestine honours the Umayyad caliph whose brief but transformative reign in the early eighth century earned him the affectionate title of the fifth Rightly Guided Caliph. Umar bin Abd al Aziz famously renounced the luxuries of the caliphate, returned wealth to the treasury, reformed the administration of the state, ended the cursing of Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, from the minbars, and devoted himself to justice and the religious revival of the Muslim community. His memory remains honoured wherever Muslims gather. Jannatah sits among the hills of the West Bank where Palestinian villages have farmed terraced hillsides of olive trees, grape vines, and fruit orchards for many centuries under successive sovereignties. Palestinian mosque architecture draws on Mamluk and Ottoman inheritance combined with modern construction, producing mosques that may feature pale limestone cladding, square minarets with muqarnas balconies, and interior courtyards or covered prayer halls suited to the Mediterranean climate. This mosque named for the pious caliph follows regional character, its stone walls harmonising with the surrounding village landscape. Inside, the carpeted prayer hall features a mihrab faced with carved stone or tile, a wooden minbar, and inscriptions of Qur'anic verses along the upper walls. Daily prayers gather village men from surrounding farms and workshops, and Jumu'ah fills the hall. Sermons in Palestinian Arabic with classical Qur'anic passages often draw on the life and justice of Umar bin Abd al Aziz as a model for honest leadership, humble living, and concern for the oppressed. Ramadan brings communal iftar gatherings featuring Palestinian specialities including maqluba, musakhan, kunafa, and fresh olives and bread from the village's own trees and ovens. Taraweeh prayers fill the evenings with devoted recitation. Qur'anic memorisation classes for children produce new hafidh each year. Women worship in a dedicated section. Nearby attractions include the olive terraces and wine valleys of the central West Bank, the religious and historic sites of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and the ancient town of Hebron with its patriarchal shrines.
