کے بارے میں

Set among the rubber plantations and rice paddies of the Besut district in northern Terengganu, Masjid Ulul Albab in Kampung Kayu Seberang Jerteh derives its name from the Quranic phrase for those of understanding, those whose hearts combine remembrance of God with reflection on creation. Terengganu has long been one of the most traditionally Muslim states of peninsular Malaysia, producing generations of ulama who travelled to Mecca and Cairo for further study and returned to establish pondok schools along the east coast. The Terengganu sultanate's earliest inscription, the fourteenth century Batu Bersurat currently kept in Kuala Terengganu, is among the oldest testimonies of Islam in the Malay world, and the spirit of careful learning it represents still shapes mosques such as this one.

The building is constructed largely of timber in the Malay vernacular tradition, with a steeply pitched tiled roof, broad wooden verandahs for the ablution area, and carved wooden screens along the upper walls admitting the monsoon breeze. Inside, the prayer hall is floored with polished dark hardwood covered by pale green carpets, and a carved minbar of angsana wood stands beside a mihrab finished in local coastal blue tile. A women's section separated by a discreet timber partition occupies the rear of the hall.

Friday prayer gathers the villagers of Kampung Kayu Seberang and surrounding hamlets, and the imam often preaches in the distinctive Terengganu Malay dialect, peppering his exhortation with proverbs about the sea, the paddy fields and the duty of neighbours to watch over one another. During Ramadan the surau adjacent to the main mosque serves free iftar to anyone who arrives, with rice packets donated by local farmers and simple dishes of fish sambal, vegetable stews and sweet kuih prepared by the women's auxiliary.

The mosque also runs a tahfiz programme for young boys memorising the Quran and a weekend kelas fardhu ain for primary school children studying basic tajwid, fiqh and the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Visitors driving along the coastal highway between Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu often pause here to pray and to admire the seamless blend of Malay craftsmanship with the ethos of an Ulul Albab community, where remembrance of God and thoughtful reflection continue to walk hand in hand beneath the coconut palms.
