کے بارے میں
Set amid the rice fields and coconut groves of Kampung Lemal in Kelantan, the Madrasah Pohon Sagu Tahfiz is a boys' Quran memorisation school whose modest masjid serves both students and the surrounding village community. Kelantan, on the north east coast of peninsular Malaysia, has long been known as the cradle of Malay Islamic learning, with a tradition of pondok institutions dating back to the nineteenth century in which students live simply, study intensively and commit the entire Quran to memory under the guidance of revered teachers. The pondok model shaped generations of ulama and continues to thrive alongside more formal religious schools across the state.
The name Pohon Sagu means sago palm, a reference to the distinctive trees that mark the local landscape and whose pith once formed a staple food for Kelantanese farmers. The madrasa occupies a cluster of single storey timber and concrete buildings around a central courtyard, with a small rectangular prayer hall at one end, dormitories along the flanks and a simple kitchen and dining room in a back corner. The masjid itself is a characteristic Kelantan construction, its pitched tile roof supported by hardwood posts, with carved timber screens along the upper walls admitting the humid monsoon breeze.
Inside, the hall is floored with polished dark wood overlaid by pale green carpets, and a modest mihrab faced in local ceramic tile anchors the qibla wall. A wooden minbar of carved meranti stands beside it, decorated with gentle floral arabesques in the Kelantan style. The students sit in tight rows for each of the five daily prayers, and on Friday the local village men join them for jumu'ah, swelling the congregation to several hundred.
The tahfiz programme follows a traditional schedule. Students rise before fajr to recite, eat a simple breakfast of rice and dried fish, then review their memorisation under the muhaffiz's careful ear until the morning's end. Afternoons include Arabic grammar, tajwid and basic fiqh classes, while evenings are devoted to more recitation before isha and a light supper. Ramadan transforms the madrasa into a hub of communal iftar and tarawih prayer, with village women preparing simple rice packets for every student and visitor. Travellers passing through Kampung Lemal are welcomed warmly and invited to listen as young voices carry the Quran forward into yet another Kelantan generation.
