کے بارے میں
Serving the bustling multicultural community of Kampung Sungai Ara on the Malaysian island of Penang, Masjid Umar Ibnu al Khattab Bayan Baru honours one of the most beloved companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Penang itself has been a meeting place of Malay, Arab, Indian, Chinese, and European communities for more than two centuries, with its historic George Town inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its rich mixture of shophouses, temples, churches, and mosques. The neighbourhood of Bayan Baru grew rapidly from the 1970s with the expansion of the free industrial zone, drawing workers and families from across the peninsula who needed dignified places to pray, study, and raise their children.
Umar ibn al Khattab (may God be pleased with him) is remembered as the second rightly guided caliph, a ruler of extraordinary justice, humility, and discernment whose policies established diwans, postal services, and the Hijri calendar still used throughout the Muslim world today. The Prophet once said that if there were to be a prophet after him, it would be Umar, and the companions described him as a man whose judgement was illuminated by the very truth spoken in his heart. Dedicating a Malaysian mosque to his name plants a quiet daily reminder of just leadership, fearless sincerity, and care for the poor and oppressed.
Malaysian mosque architecture blends classical Islamic forms with regional tropical adaptation, and this masjid reflects that blend. A prominent green dome crowns the main prayer hall, slender white minarets frame the facade, wide verandas and louvred windows catch the constant sea breezes, and a tiled courtyard welcomes worshippers to remove their shoes before entering. Inside, patterned carpets cover the floor, the mihrab carries elegant Qur'anic calligraphy, and a separate well arranged women's section sits behind carved wooden screens. Friday sermons are delivered in Malay, with Qur'anic passages recited in Arabic, while Ramadan nights fill the hall with the scent of rendang, nasi lemak, and cardamom tea shared at iftar. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at this Bayan Baru mosque appear on this page for every resident and traveller in Penang.
