About

Beside the lush green banks of the Kushiyara river tributaries in the Karimganj district of southern Assam, the Nayagram Paschim Masjid welcomes worshippers from a closely knit Bengali Muslim community settled among rice paddies, betel nut groves, and banana plantations. Karimganj district lies in the Barak Valley of Assam, a region whose language, cuisine, and cultural traditions share much with neighbouring Sylhet in Bangladesh. The area has been inhabited by Bengali Muslim farmers for several centuries, and its medieval history includes the presence of teachers who travelled eastward from Dhaka, Bengal, and Bihar. The spiritual life of this community is rooted in the medieval Bengali tradition of the Sylheti saints, especially Shah Jalal and his companions (may God have mercy on them) whose arrival in the Surma valley in the fourteenth century opened the way for the peaceful spread of Islam across the lush wetlands of eastern Bengal. Every mosque in Karimganj inherits a share of that legacy, and the five daily prayers in this village masjid echo the patient teaching of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) through generations of faithful Bengali mothers, fathers, and grandparents. The building reflects the modest but dignified style of rural Barak Valley mosques. A whitewashed exterior, a central green painted dome, three smaller domes along the ridge line, a single slender minaret, and a tiled verandah welcome worshippers entering from the dusty lane. Inside, simple cotton prayer mats and donated carpets cover the floor during the cooler months, and a painted wooden minbar stands beside a modest mihrab on the qiblah wall. Ceiling fans turn lazily above the worshippers during the humid monsoon afternoons. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Nayagram Paschim Masjid in Karimganj, together with the address, a clear location map, and practical visitor notes, are provided on this page for village residents, travellers from the Barak Valley towns of Silchar and Badarpur, and visitors crossing from nearby Bangladesh. Karimganj is known for its tea gardens, its silent riverside ghats, and its proximity to the beautiful hill station of Mizoram. After Jumu'ah, worshippers at this mosque often sit in the shade of a jackfruit tree to enjoy steaming plates of fragrant biryani, sweet rasgulla, and strong Assam tea prepared by volunteers with the gentle hospitality characteristic of Bengali Muslim village life.
