About

Within the farming village of Khuza'a on the eastern edge of the Gaza Strip, a short distance from the armistice line, stands the Masjid Abd al Malik Abu Rujayla, named after a resident whose family has lived on this soil for generations. Khuza'a lies in the southern Gaza governorate near the town of Khan Younis and sits amid olive groves, citrus orchards, and fields of wheat that stretch towards the border fence. The Palestinian community of this village has endured repeated hardship, and the mosque has often served as shelter, clinic, and community centre during difficult times, embodying the refuge that houses of God, in Quranic imagery, provide to those who turn to them. The land of Palestine itself occupies a sacred place in the Islamic imagination as the home of Masjid al Aqsa in Jerusalem, the first qiblah of the believers and the site from which the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, ascended during the night journey of Isra and Miraj. Across Palestine countless village mosques like Abu Rujayla carry the names of local benefactors or families, creating a living map of civic memory. Architecturally the mosque presents the humble idiom of rural Palestinian building, a single square prayer hall with modest dome, white plastered walls inside and out, and a simple minaret crowned by a green painted finial. The mihrab is inscribed with verses from Surah al Baqarah regarding the direction of prayer, and shelves along the rear wall hold copies of the Quran for readers to take up after the obligatory prayers. The mosque hosts the five daily prayers, Jumu'ah for the village, taraweeh through Ramadan with children and elders gathered side by side, and the two Eid congregations that fill the courtyard. It also runs Quran memorisation circles for the children of Khuza'a, ensuring the rope of God remains firmly held in this beleaguered but steadfast corner of southern Palestine. Farmers returning from their fields at dusk pause beneath the modest minaret to offer maghrib, finding serenity even amid the enduring hardships of this frontier village existence.
