Ithna Asheri المسلم الجمعية الشمالي الغربي IMAN

Serving the greater Seattle area of Washington state on the Pacific coast of the United States, the Ithna Asheri Muslim Association of the Northwest, known by its acronym IMAN, occupies a community building in the suburb of Kirkland east of Lake Washington. The organisation has served as a focal point for a specific tradition of Muslim worship in the Pacific Northwest since its founding several decades ago, welcoming families from East Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Iran, Iraq, and many other backgrounds. Kirkland itself is a comfortable lakeside city with a small downtown, leafy residential streets, and proximity to the major technology employers of the wider Seattle metropolitan area.

IMAN functions as both a prayer space and a broad community centre, providing daily congregational prayers, Qur'an and Arabic classes for children, youth programmes, lectures by visiting scholars, commemoration gatherings during the months of Muharram and Ramadan, funeral services, and a rich calendar of cultural events that reflect the diverse heritage of its membership. The building is modest in exterior, set among the wooded residential streets of Kirkland, yet inside it houses a welcoming prayer hall, a women's section, a library, classrooms, and a kitchen used frequently for community meals.

The prayer hall is finished with pale green carpet marked by geometric prayer line medallions, a mihrab framed by simple calligraphic inscriptions, and bookshelves holding copies of the Qur'an in Arabic, English, and Urdu along with biographies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and collections of the teachings of his noble family, may God be pleased with them. A carved wooden minbar stands beside the mihrab, and paintings of the sacred haramain of Makkah and Madinah hang respectfully near the entrance.

Daily prayers gather technology workers from the Eastside corridor, students from the nearby community college and the University of Washington, families from the surrounding neighbourhoods, and older members of the community. Friday khutbahs are delivered in English with Qur'anic verses quoted in Arabic, often addressing the spiritual life of Muslims in a modern American city.
