About

Mosquée de Lille El Forkane in La Madeleine bears a name carrying profound Quranic resonance. Al-Furqan translates as the Criterion, referring specifically to the Holy Quran itself as the criterion that distinguishes truth from falsehood, guidance from error, right from wrong. Surah Al-Furqan, the twenty-fifth chapter of the Quran, contains extensive discussion of divine revelation, the rejection of idolatry, and the characteristics of the faithful. Naming a mosque after this divine attribute of the Quran reflects the congregation's centering of the holy text as the fundamental source of guidance in their lives. La Madeleine is a commune on the northern edge of Lille, with a Muslim population drawn from Maghreb and other backgrounds. The mosque serves this community through the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and a calendar of educational and charitable programs. Facilities typically include an ablution area, main prayer hall oriented toward the qiblah in Makkah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran and Arabic instruction, and sometimes a library of Islamic literature. The imam leads prayers and delivers Friday khutbahs in French and Arabic addressing themes from the Holy Quran, the Prophetic Sunnah, and contemporary issues facing the congregation. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds and iftar meals shared communally. The imam often recites specific portions of the Quran each evening, working toward completion of the entire revelation over the thirty nights of the blessed month. The last ten nights of Ramadan receive particular attention, with itikaf retreats, special night prayers, and observances of Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power, when the first revelation of the Quran descended to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers bring large congregations, and the mosque organizes Qurbani sacrifices during Eid al-Adha. Madrasah programs teach children Quranic recitation, Arabic letters, Islamic history, and moral instruction, with particular emphasis on memorization of selected surahs for use in daily prayers. The mosque's library includes an impressive collection of Quranic tafsir works in Arabic and French, hadith collections from the canonical Sunni compilations, fiqh manuals from the Maliki school predominant among North African Muslims, and modern scholarly works addressing contemporary issues, making it a resource for serious students beyond the basic weekend programs.
