Lagos Central Mosque stands as one of the most prominent and historically significant mosques of Lagos and indeed of all Nigeria, located in the heart of Lagos Island, the original city centre of the Nigerian commercial capital. The mosque has a long history dating back to the nineteenth century, originally established as a simple wooden structure by the early Muslim community of Lagos and gradually rebuilt and expanded over generations as the congregation grew and the city developed. The current structure is a grand multi domed mosque with tall minarets, an expansive prayer hall capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers during Friday Jumuah and major festivals, and ornate interior decoration reflecting the dignity of its role as the central mosque of one of the largest Muslim cities in Africa. The mosque is affiliated with the Office of the Chief Imam of Lagos and serves as the primary venue for major Islamic observances in the city, including the Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha prayers which draw tens of thousands of worshippers to the surrounding streets. The prayer hall is carpeted in rich tones, oriented toward the qibla, and decorated with Arabic calligraphy drawn from the Qur'an and the beautiful names of Allah, with a finely crafted mihrab and an imposing mimbar from which the chief imam delivers the Friday khutbah. The mosque hosts a rich programme of religious and educational activities including daily Qur'an recitation, weekly tafsir lessons, Arabic language classes, Islamic jurisprudence studies particularly in the Maliki madhhab followed by most West African Muslims, youth programmes, marriage and funeral services, and welfare distribution to needy families. Ramadan transforms Lagos Central Mosque into a focal point of Nigerian Muslim devotion with overflowing tarawih crowds, mass community iftars, Qur'an khatm sessions, and itikaf in the final ten nights, while Eid prayers fill the surrounding streets with a sea of worshippers in festive agbada and hijab celebrating together. The imam's role at Lagos Central Mosque extends beyond strictly religious leadership to include ceremonial participation in civic events, media interviews on matters of Muslim concern, and consultation with state and federal authorities on issues affecting the Muslim community, reflecting the mosque's position as a landmark institution whose voice carries weight in the wider Nigerian public discourse on religion, society, and national life.
