Jamh Mosque Mhmdyh Hnfyh

Jamia Masjid Muhammadiya Hanifiya occupies a working neighbourhood in Lahore, Punjab's historic cultural capital and long one of the great centres of Islamic learning on the subcontinent. The city carries the memory of luminaries such as Data Ganj Bakhsh Ali Hujwiri, whose eleventh century shrine still draws visitors from across Pakistan, as well as generations of poets, jurists, and calligraphers who made Lahore a rival to Delhi during the Mughal centuries. The mosque takes its name from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, signalling its devotion to the prophetic example in daily worship and teaching. In scale it is a neighbourhood jamia rather than a grand monument: a raised prayer hall fronted by a columned veranda, a compact courtyard tiled in green and white, and a single slender minaret from which the adhan carries over the narrow lanes below. The architectural vocabulary is unmistakably Punjabi, drawing on the brickwork and stucco mouldings that distinguish the older masjids of the walled city, with arched niches picked out in pale ochre and window grills cut in geometric patterns of great delicacy. Inside, the qibla wall is faced with ceramic tiles in the Multani tradition, their blues cooling the hall during the long summer afternoons when Lahore temperatures climb above forty degrees Celsius. Daily prayers draw a steady congregation of shopkeepers and artisans, while Jumu'ah attendance fills the courtyard and spills onto mats laid in the adjoining lane. Ramadan brings crowded tarawih, community iftar plates of pakoras and dates, and late night dars sessions on Quranic tafsir led by visiting scholars. Eid prayer is followed by embraces, children clutching crisp rupee notes given generously by elders, and the traffic of the old city rising noisily around the mosque once again. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; shoes are removed at the veranda and women pray in a curtained area upstairs reached by a narrow staircase. The mosque sits within easy reach of the Badshahi Mosque, the Lahore Fort, the mausoleum of the emperor Jahangir across the river, and the shrine of Data Darbar for those continuing their exploration of the walled city.
