Along a residential street of the Pakistani city of Lahore in Punjab, Jamia Masjid Tawhid al Hadith serves a congregation committed to the close study of the Qur'an and the prophetic hadith. Lahore itself is one of the most historically important Muslim cities of South Asia, capital of the Mughal empire during the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan, graced by such celebrated landmarks as the Badshahi Masjid, the Lahore Fort, the Shalimar Gardens, and the tomb of the poet philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal (may God have mercy on him), whose Urdu and Persian verses awakened the Muslim world to the call of self knowledge and renewed confidence in the twentieth century.
Tawhid, the affirmation of the absolute oneness of God, is the central pillar of Islamic faith, and al Hadith refers to the recorded words, deeds, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, preserved across generations with painstaking care by scholars such as al Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al Tirmidhi, al Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah (may God have mercy on them). Naming a Jamia masjid Tawhid al Hadith signals the congregation's devotion to the Qur'anic call to worship God alone and to the sunnah of the Messenger as the authoritative guide for living faith. The Prophet himself said that he had left two things, the Qur'an and the hadith, and whoever holds fast to them will never go astray.
Architecturally the mosque reflects the classic Pakistani Punjabi style. A multi storey concrete prayer hall rises above the street, a dome crowns the qiblah section, a single minaret carries loudspeakers to summon the neighbourhood to prayer, tiled arcades frame the entrance, and calligraphic panels decorate the qiblah wall. A women's section is arranged on an upper floor. The Friday khutbah is delivered in Urdu with extensive Qur'anic citation in Arabic. Ramadan fills the hall nightly with tarawih, Qur'anic recitation, and iftars of samosas, pakoras, biryani, and chilled rooh afza. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha are published on this page for every worshipper of Lahore.
