About

IGMG Medine Moschee Berlin in the Märkisches Viertel district operates under the auspices of IGMG, the Islamische Gemeinschaft Millî Görüş, one of the largest Turkish Islamic organizations in Germany. The organization, whose name translates as the Islamic Community of National Vision, emerged from the broader Millî Görüş movement associated with Turkish political-religious thinker Necmettin Erbakan and maintains a strong network of mosques across Germany and Europe serving primarily Turkish Muslim communities. The mosque's naming references Medine, the Turkish rendering of Madinah, the holy city in Saudi Arabia where Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, migrated from Makkah and established the first Islamic state, where he is buried in the Prophet's Mosque, and which remains the second holiest city in Islam after Makkah. Naming the mosque Medine thus connects the congregation to the Prophet's adopted home and to the blessed city that all Muslims hope to visit during their lifetimes. Märkisches Viertel, a large-scale housing development in northern Berlin built in the 1960s and 1970s, has become home to substantial Turkish and other immigrant populations. The mosque serves the local Turkish Muslim community with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and a calendar of Islamic observances and educational programs. Services are conducted in Turkish with Quran recitation in Arabic, following the Hanafi school of jurisprudence that predominates Turkish Muslim practice. The imam leads daily prayers and delivers Friday khutbahs in Turkish, with topics often addressing faith, ethical conduct, family responsibility, and Muslim life in Germany. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds, mukabele programs completing the Quran over the thirty nights, and iftar meals featuring traditional Turkish dishes. Kadir Gecesi draws particularly large gatherings for extended night prayers. Mevlid Kandili commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, with special ceremonies. The mosque runs weekend Quran classes, Turkish language instruction for children, youth programs, and women's groups, serving as a comprehensive community center as well as a place of worship.
