Mosquée Jamel Edine El Afghani مسجد جمال الدين الأفغاني

Far inland from the Mediterranean coast, in the small town of Mazouna in Algeria's Relizane province, the Mosquee Jamal al Din al Afghani bears the noble name of the nineteenth century scholar and reformer whose ideas shaped so much of modern Muslim thought. Jamal al Din al Afghani, who lived from around 1838 until 1897, travelled widely across Afghanistan, Iran, India, Egypt, and the Ottoman lands, teaching, writing, and organising reform circles, and he argued persuasively for the unity of the Muslim world, the revival of sincere Islamic scholarship, and the careful engagement of the umma with the modern sciences. His student Muhammad Abduh carried forward these ideas in Egypt, and together they shaped a current of thought that continues to influence Muslim reformers today.

Mazouna itself is a historic town with its own Islamic heritage, home for centuries to a celebrated Qur'anic school, the Mazouna medersa, which trained scholars from across the central Maghrib and attracted students from Morocco, Tunisia, and sub Saharan Africa. The town nestles among the hills of the Dahra range, overlooking the fertile Chelif valley, and its architecture mixes Ottoman, Andalusian, and Berber influences carried by successive waves of settlement over many centuries.

The prayer hall is an example of Algerian provincial mosque architecture, with smooth whitewashed walls, a single square based minaret in the North African tradition, and a modest dome above the sanctuary. Inside, the carpets are deep red, the mihrab is framed by carved plaster muqarnas echoing the Mazouna medersa tradition, and a wooden minbar stands beside it. Calligraphic panels bear verses from the Qur'an and short quotations from the writings of Jamal al Din al Afghani.

Daily prayers gather shopkeepers, farmers from the surrounding valley, teachers from the town's schools, and elders who have prayed here for many decades. Friday khutbahs are delivered in classical Arabic with occasional phrases in the Derja of the Dahra, often drawing on themes of Muslim unity, sincere learning, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and of his noble companions, may God be pleased with them.
