Masjid Cabdi Cali, the Somali rendering of the Arabic names Abdi Ali, is a neighbourhood masjid in Mogadishu whose name pairs two deeply loved Muslim honorifics: servant of the All-High and a tribute to Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم. Masjids with such doubled naming are common in Somalia, where personal piety and communal remembrance blend naturally into everyday language. The masjid sits unobtrusively within its block, identifiable chiefly by the green crescent on its low dome and the slender minaret that carries the adhan out over the surrounding rooftops. Mogadishu's street life flows around it: children in school uniforms, women in colourful guntiinos and hijabs bearing parcels home from the market, elders moving slowly toward the doorway a half hour before Maghrib. Inside, the layout is simple and practical, built for worship rather than display. Carpets laid end to end define the rows, a clear qiblah wall holds the mihrab, and small niches near the entrance hold copies of the Qur'an for anyone who wishes to recite while waiting for the iqamah. The imam, like most Somali imams, is a locally trained scholar working within the Shafi'i madhhab, and his sermons draw on a familiar palette of themes: sincerity, good conduct with neighbours, care for orphans and widows, steadfastness in hardship. Somali society places deep importance on the figure of the imam as a moral reference point, not only for legal rulings but for counsel during family disputes and personal troubles which he handles with patience. Visitors passing through Mogadishu who wish to pray here will be received warmly, with the standard expectations of modest dress, removal of footwear, and a quiet demeanour before and during prayer. Photography should be avoided, and any questions directed to the imam or caretaker rather than to worshippers absorbed in their personal devotion before or after the congregation. A few mature trees in the small courtyard provide welcome shade through the hot months and offer a natural gathering point where older worshippers sit in low conversation after Maghrib.
