Along a quiet road in the West Midlands town of Oldbury, the Hazrat Sultan Bahu Trust operates Langley Masjid, a religious and community centre inspired by the teachings of the seventeenth century Punjabi saint Sultan Bahu. Sultan Bahu, born in Shorkot in 1630 and buried near Jhang, composed powerful Punjabi devotional poetry whose most famous lines beginning Alif Allah Chambe Di Booti still circulate across South Asia and the diaspora as a shorthand for love of the divine. His teachings emphasised the cultivation of inner awareness, sincere remembrance and the moral duty to translate devotion into service. British Muslims of Pakistani and Kashmiri background have sustained his memory in several centres across the United Kingdom, and the Sandwell branch is among the most active.

The Langley Masjid building occupies a refurbished former community hall, extended sympathetically with a modest green domed extension at one end. Inside, the ground floor hosts the main prayer hall, carpeted in emerald with gold medallions, while the first floor contains a women's hall, classrooms and a small library stocked with copies of the collected verses of Sultan Bahu in Punjabi and English translation. The mihrab is finished in pale travertine with a calligraphic inscription from Surat al Baqara, and a carved wooden minbar stands beside it.

The trust runs a busy weekly programme that reflects the dual character of Sultan Bahu's teaching. Weekday evenings bring Quran and tajwid classes for children, a hifz scheme for older boys and a women's halaqa on Thursday mornings in Punjabi and English. Friday nights see a circle of remembrance focused on the Punjabi verses of Sultan Bahu, with singers and reciters performing before a packed hall. The trust also coordinates charitable work including food parcels for needy families in the Sandwell area, support for new Muslim reverts and grants for orphans in Pakistan.

Friday prayer attendance is strong, drawing worshippers from across Oldbury, West Bromwich and Smethwick. Sermons are delivered in English and Urdu by rotating imams, and occasional guest speakers include scholars from Birmingham and Lahore. During Ramadan the downstairs hall serves communal iftar prepared by volunteers, with dishes ranging from dates and samosas to biryani and kheer. The annual urs commemoration of Sultan Bahu draws visitors from across the country for three days of devotional song, reflection and shared meals. Travellers to the West Midlands who attend any programme here leave with a gentle taste of the Punjabi love of God that has flourished for almost four centuries.
