Khalid ibn al Walid Mosque in al Hara 74 of al Safa quarter, Omdurman, carries the name of one of the most celebrated generals of early Islamic history, Sayf Allah al Maslul, the drawn sword of God, who led campaigns across Syria and Iraq during the reign of the first caliph Abu Bakr al Siddiq, may God be pleased with them both. Al Safa neighbourhood is part of the expanding western reaches of Omdurman, developed in the late twentieth century along a grid of numbered blocks, with Hara 74 indicating the precise cluster of streets that surrounds this Friday mosque. The building is a characteristic Sudanese masjid of its era: whitewashed concrete walls painted a soft cream, a single shallow dome over the mihrab, a square minaret with green trim, and a courtyard shaded by sparse acacia trees whose thorn branches offer welcome shade in the punishing noon sun. Inside, the carpet runs in simple red and black lines toward Mecca, and the qibla wall bears a large calligraphic roundel with the testimony of faith in gold against deep blue. A raised platform at one side serves as minbar and reading lectern. The congregation is drawn from the numbered blocks around the mosque, a mix of civil servants, traders, and artisans, and includes families who fled the wars in the Nuba mountains and Darfur to settle in Omdurman. Daily prayers are calm and attentive, the imam favouring measured recitation of shorter surahs. Jumu'ah fills the hall and the shaded walkways, with sermons often touching on the virtues of patience and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and his companions, may God be pleased with them. Ramadan brings evening tarawih and community iftars of aseeda, ful, and fresh bread. Eid prayers open the street to a gathering of white jalabiyas and children exchanging sweets. Visitors reach al Safa by a short ride west from the Omdurman souk, a short distance from the mausoleum of the Mahdi, the Khalifa house museum, the twin minarets of the Nilein mosque along the river, and the famous camel market at Shendi north of the capital.
