کے بارے میں
Bearing the poetic name Baabul Ilmi, meaning the Gate of Knowledge, this mosque serves the students, teachers and staff of SMA Plus Negeri seventeen in the city of Palembang, capital of South Sumatra in Indonesia. The appellation Gate of Knowledge carries particular resonance in Muslim educational tradition, alluding both to the Prophet's well known saying about the city of knowledge and its gate, and to the humble conviction that true learning begins with faith. Palembang itself is one of the oldest cities of maritime Southeast Asia, having served as the capital of the Srivijaya empire from the seventh to the thirteenth century and later receiving Islam through traders and scholars whose networks connected the Musi River to Yemen, India and China. The city's culinary specialities, including pempek fish cakes and model soup, reflect its cosmopolitan history. The school mosque sits on the campus between classroom blocks and the playing field, its architecture drawn from a contemporary Islamic vocabulary with Southeast Asian touches, featuring white rendered walls, a broad central dome tiled in emerald green and a freestanding minaret from which the adhan is called by rotating student mu'adhdhins. A covered walkway links the mosque to the main school building, shading pupils from tropical sun and monsoon rain. Inside, the prayer hall is carpeted in soft grey with emerald stripes, lit by ceiling fans and elegant pendant lights, and bordered by calligraphic panels inscribed with verses of Surah al Alaq commanding the reader to read in the name of their Lord. The mihrab is framed by intricately carved wooden panels depicting stylised palmettes, and a modest minbar stands beside it. A women's section occupies a partitioned area at the rear with its own entrance. The school uses the mosque for congregational Dhuhr prayers, Friday sermons delivered by teachers and visiting ulama, Qur'anic competitions and evening tahfiz classes. During Ramadan the students organise daily iftars at school followed by tarawih led by senior pupils, and the school celebrates graduations with blessings recited in the mosque. Visitors with appointments at the school are welcome, dressing modestly, removing shoes and observing the disciplined Indonesian school mosque etiquette.
