کے بارے میں

Masjid Jamek Perai is the main Friday mosque for the town of Perai on mainland Penang, serving a substantial Muslim community that has grown alongside the industrial expansion of the Prai Free Industrial Zone over the past five decades. Unlike a surau, a masjid jamek is specifically constructed to host Jumu'ah prayer and the associated khutbah, and it therefore has a larger prayer hall, a formal minbar, and the administrative structure of a registered mosque under the Penang Islamic Religious Council. The building itself is substantial without being grand — a central dome, a visible minaret from which the adhan is broadcast, a main prayer hall that holds several thousand worshippers when full, and a women's prayer area on the upper level. The congregation reflects the industrial and residential profile of Perai: Malay families of mixed origins, workers from across Malaysia who have settled in the area for employment in the factories and port facilities, and a mix of Indian-Muslim and smaller communities. Fridays fill the prayer hall comfortably, with attendees arriving on motorbikes and in cars, and khutbahs delivered in Malay reflecting the dominant language of the local community. During Ramadan, the mosque runs nightly Taraweeh prayers, hosts community iftars organised in rotation by neighbourhood associations, and serves as a collection point for zakat distributed to local families in need. Eid prayers draw one of the largest Muslim gatherings on mainland Penang, with the grounds filling beyond capacity and the overflow spilling into adjacent streets. The mosque also runs regular Qur'an classes for children, tajweed courses for adults, and Islamic lectures in Malay that address contemporary questions of faith and practice. For visitors to Perai — whether for business in the industrial zone, for transit through the port, or simply passing through the mainland side of Penang — the mosque is a practical place for prayer and a representative example of the working Malaysian Muslim communities that anchor the economic life of the country.
