About

Bait Al Rahmaan in Ridderkerk, a municipality on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas river just southeast of Rotterdam, takes its name meaning the House of the Most Compassionate from Ar Rahman, one of the most beautiful names of Allah emphasising His mercy that encompasses all creation. The mosque serves a small but dedicated Muslim community in this Dutch town whose residents include a diverse mix of longstanding Dutch families and more recent arrivals from Muslim majority countries. Ridderkerk's industrial heritage and its position along the waterways of the Rhine delta have shaped a practical and welcoming community, and the mosque contributes to the religious and social life of its Muslim residents. Housed in an adapted urban building, the mosque features a prayer hall laid with carpets oriented toward the qibla, a mihrab indicating the direction of Makkah, a small mimbar for the Friday khutbah, and a separate section for women worshippers. Ablution facilities serve the daily needs of the congregation, and a small library holds Qur'an copies and works of Islamic learning. Programmes offered include the five daily prayers, Friday Jumuah gathering, Qur'an recitation and tajwid classes for children and adults, Arabic language instruction, Dutch language support for newer immigrants, marriage and funeral services, zakat collection and distribution, and welfare assistance for families in need. Ramadan sees the mosque filled with worshippers for nightly tarawih prayers, communal iftars shared across the congregation, Qur'an khatm sessions through the month, and the quiet devotion of itikaf in the final ten nights. Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha bring festive prayers and family gatherings where members of the community greet one another with warm embraces, reflecting the mercy of Ar Rahman after which their house of worship is named. The small congregation at Bait Al Rahmaan has a particularly warm and personal character, with the imam knowing each family by name and taking time after prayers to inquire about the wellbeing of members who have been absent, following the example of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam who was attentive to each of his companions individually and who made every member of his community feel valued and seen.
