Established as a community gathering place for Muslims living in the northern Milanese suburb of Sesto San Giovanni within the Lombardy region of Italy, the Centro Islamico di Milano Sesto serves a diverse congregation of families from Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Senegal, Bangladesh and Albania whose members have settled in this once industrial town over the past four decades. Sesto San Giovanni was long known as the Italian Stalingrad because of its dense concentration of factories including Falck steel works, Breda mechanical workshops and Magneti Marelli electrical components which employed tens of thousands of workers during the twentieth century. The factories have closed or downsized, but the neighbourhoods built to house the industrial workforce now provide homes for newer communities of immigrants who sustain the local economy through small businesses, healthcare work and construction. The centre occupies a converted warehouse along a quiet street off Viale Italia, its industrial brick facade softened by a pair of green painted wooden doors and a discreet sign in Arabic and Italian. Inside, the open floor has been divided into a main prayer hall for men, a smaller but well appointed women's section, a kitchen, offices and two classrooms for weekend Qur'an and Arabic instruction. The main hall is carpeted in deep blue with gold prayer markings, and the qibla wall features a simple plywood mihrab painted with calligraphic panels of the basmala. Friday prayers are delivered in Arabic with a brief summary in Italian, and the khutbah often engages contemporary themes of neighbourliness, justice and family balance. During Ramadan the centre hosts nightly iftars that rotate national cuisines through the thirty days, introducing congregants to tagines, ful medames, thieboudienne, biryani and burek. The centre participates actively in Sesto's civic life, contributing to interfaith dialogues at the local parish churches and supporting food drives through the Caritas network, reflecting the generous neighbourliness that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, set as a mark of true faith. Visitors arriving by metro line one to the Sesto Marelli stop can reach the centre on foot in ten minutes, welcomed with modest dress and warm Italian hospitality.
