Known affectionately throughout Malaysia as the Blue Mosque of Shah Alam, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque is the principal mosque of the state of Selangor and one of the most striking religious buildings in Southeast Asia. Situated in Shah Alam, the administrative capital of Selangor, the mosque rises above the surrounding city with a silhouette that has become one of the defining images of modern Malaysian architecture. Its location, a short distance from Kuala Lumpur, makes it both a place of daily worship for local residents and a regular destination for Muslim travellers exploring the Klang Valley.

Construction of the mosque began in 1982 and was completed in 1988 under the reign of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, the eleventh Sultan of Selangor, after whom the mosque is named. At the time of its opening, it was the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and it remains among the largest in the region, with a main prayer hall that can accommodate approximately twenty four thousand worshippers across its two levels. Four slender minarets rise to a height of over one hundred and forty metres each, making them among the tallest mosque minarets anywhere in the world, while the central dome, finished in vivid blue aluminium and soft cream, gives the mosque its popular nickname.

The design draws upon the enduring heritage of Malay Islamic architecture while incorporating influences from the Ottoman and Mughal styles that have long inspired mosque building across the Muslim world. Inside the prayer hall, a vast open space is supported by tall arches and illuminated by a central chandelier that hangs beneath the main dome. The walls are adorned with Quranic calligraphy executed by Malaysian master calligraphers, and panels of verse honour the memory of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose example guides the devotional life of Malaysia's Muslims. The floor is covered with carpets laid out in prayer rows that guide worshippers toward the qibla facing Mecca.

Across every day of the week the call to prayer rises five times from the minarets, gathering worshippers from across Shah Alam, the wider Klang Valley, and the neighbouring districts into a steady rhythm of devotion. Friday prayers draw some of the largest gatherings, with thousands of Muslims filling the prayer hall and spilling into the surrounding courtyards. During the blessed month of Ramadan, nightly Taraweeh prayers create an especially moving atmosphere, with recitation of the Holy Quran echoing through the vast hall, and iftar meals shared with families and travellers in the Malaysian spirit of open hospitality.

Beyond its primary role as a place of worship, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque serves as a centre for Islamic study, religious lectures, Quran memorisation classes, and community events throughout the year. Tours are welcomed outside of prayer times, allowing visitors from around the world to appreciate the architectural beauty and the warm welcome that have made this mosque one of the proudest landmarks of Selangor and of Malaysia today.
