Dedicated to the fourth imam of the Prophet's noble household, Imam Ali ibn al Husayn Zayn al Abidin, may God be pleased with him, the Masjid Imam Sajjad alayhi al salam in the Shazand district of Markazi province of Iran welcomes worshippers in a quiet provincial town of the central plateau. The honorific Zayn al Abidin means the ornament of the worshippers, and the title al Sajjad refers to the one who prostrates often, both reflecting the imam's long vigils of night prayer and his tears of remembrance for his father Husayn and the household of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. His famous Sahifa Sajjadiya, a collection of supplications also called the Psalms of the Household, is cherished across the Muslim world.

Imam Sajjad was born in Medina around the year 38 of the Hijri, survived the tragedy of Karbala as a young man too ill to join the battle, and spent the rest of his life in teaching, prayer, and patient witness under the shadow of the Umayyad caliphate. He was buried in Jannat al Baqi in Medina in the year 95 of the Hijri. His legacy of supplication and his quiet devotional life continue to guide believers across the centuries, and naming a mosque after him roots the Iranian congregation in that luminous chain.

Architecturally the Shazand masjid follows the provincial neighbourhood style. Pale brick walls, a modest blue tiled dome, a single slender minaret, carved wooden doors, arched windows fitted with coloured glass, and a small interior courtyard for ablutions welcome worshippers. Inside, patterned Persian carpets cover the floor, calligraphic panels in Nastaliq script cite supplications from the Sahifa Sajjadiya, and a separate majlis hall hosts Muharram and Safar gatherings for the commemoration of the noble household.
